Project Runway Challenge -- Week 5: The Lexus Challenge

For week five, the designers were divided into teams of three.  Almost instantly the eye-rolling and sighing began and we JUST KNEW which team was going to be at the bottom.

You can't create nice things when you're in a totally foul mood.

The designers were told to create a luxurious, high-end mini collection from unconventional materials.  The shops they could choose items from were an vintage wallpaper store, a food market, and a party supply/home goods store.

The top looks were from team Jeremy, Karen, and Kate (Jeremy won):

The middle of the pack looks were team Alexander, Miranda, and Bradon:

Along with team Justin, Dom, and Helen:

And the losing team (which was like watching oil and water try to mix) was Ken, Alexandria, and Sue:

Sue was eliminated.

So use "Luxury and High-End" as the inspiration for your jewelry creation this week and/or select one of the runway outfits to inspire you.  You can also use Lexus as your inspiration.  And if you want to continue the challenge using unconventional materials like the PR contestants had to do, that's even more awesome.

Project Runway Jewelry Challenge Week 4 Results

Week four's theme was Bow Ties.  SRAJD members had the option of running with the theme or using a design from the Project Runway show as inspiration (see the clothing designs here).

Without further ado, here are the entries for the week (remember, you can still submit even after the deadline!):

Nohline l'Ecuyer: "Black tie. Make with rocks we picked up from a beach in Haines, Alaska; fine silver handmade findings and a little black tie."

Nohline l'Ecuyer:

Symbols for equal marriage for all. 
Something old - the old Afgani beads;
Something new - the new 2x2 sterling silver chain symbolizing the equality sign;
Something borrowed - (kind of permanently) Jerry's tie silk also with parallel lines;
Something blue - Blue lampwork beads and blue pearls.
And them something a little more "wedding" - white silk and white pearls.

Kim Forrer:"I must confess I absolutely hate bowties in every shape or form.....but I really wanted to submit an entry to this contest. So this is what I came up with. The "bowtie" is copper that I cut out and colored with layered green inks and wrapped with oxidized copper wire and is used as the link for the silk ribbon to the beaded part of the necklace on the right side.

Grace Gipson: "Black and white was a big theme for the bow tie episode, so I am inspired by the colors this time: white, black, silver."

Joyce Ingram: "My entry for the Week 4 Bow Ties is a bit of an asymmetric look. A necklace that could be dressed up or down."

Project Runway Challenge -- Week 4: Bow Ties

This week the designers could make anything they wanted but it had to use bow ties in some way.

Spoiler alert!  I'm going to talk about the episode in this blog post.  

Bradon won... here's his design (hard to see the detail in this photo).  And he proposed to his partner after his win was announced (wasn't the Skype scene awesome!).

   

The other top two designs were Kate and Dom.

Then there were some middle of the pack (apparently you don't put Sandro in the middle of the pack).

   

 The three lowest scores were Miranda, Sue, and Jeremy.  But none of them got sent home because of Sandro's temper tantrum and subsequent self-ousting.

 

So use "bow ties" as the inspiration for your jewelry creation this week and/or select one of the runway outfits to inspire you.

Project Runway Jewelry Challenge Week 3 Results

Week three's theme was Coney Island (and/or its carnival game prizes).  SRAJD members had the option of running with the theme or using a design from the Project Runway show as inspiration (see the clothing designs here).

Without further ado, here are the entries for the week (remember, you can still submit even after the deadline!):

Grace Gipson: "I'm not inspired by dresses that look like they were thrown together with balloons that were cut into strips. But, it's my job to find inspiration. I decided the dress made by Bradon and Karen needed some styling. So this bracelet is my week 3 Coney Island inspiration."  

Tasha Harris: "Trying new things, like the rides at a carnival. I chose the ride of the violin, with its twists and turns of this weave. A happy mixture of music and rides of the carnival. It had to be petite, bold and svelte as any red dress wearing woman. (Stone-Magnesite)."

 

Laura Bracken: "I ended up going with more of an overall FEEL of carnival prizes rather than any sort of literal interpretation.  This gave me a chance to use some fun beads to make this over-the-top big, heavy necklace."

Nohline l'Ecuyer: "Ispired by the red hat dress, these are glass disks which I folded over and made into dangling earrings using sterling silver and two odd red beads I had on hand."

 

Joyce Ingram: "For my Coney Island entry I have created a longer styled necklace that reminds me of all the sparkly lights and bright colours of the carnival. I was also thinking (for a Scottish person) of the colours of the furry soft toys that are given as prizes."

Project Runway Challenge -- Week 3: Coney Island

Another unconventional materials challenge, and teams no less!

Week 3 of our Project Runway game… here’s the third challenge.

The designers went to Coney Island in teams of two, played carnival games, and the prizes they won were their materials for the challenge.  They also used three words as their inspiration which were chosen from a list of words used to describe Yoplait frozen yogurt treats.

Your mission is to create a piece of jewelry either inspired by carnival prizes or made from carnival prizes or inspired by one of the Project Runway designs for this challenge.  Additionally, if you’d like to eat some Yoplait frozen treats and choose three descriptive words as inspiration, go for it!

It’d be great if you have your piece finished before next Thursday, but it’s not mandatory.  Whenever you get it done, submit it here and we’ll add it to the blog.

Project Runway Jewelry Challenge Week 2 Results

A huge thank you to those participating in this fun SRAJD challenge.  Keep the designs coming!

Here are the results of the challenge: Diamonds (or bling, in general).  The instructions to the jewelry makers were: Make your piece of jewelry based on either the challenge theme (million dollar precious gem jewelry) or inspired by any of the outfits from the show.

Annabel Alleyne’s creation:

Grace Gipson: “Kahindo's design was not worthy of a 'go home', that's all I want to say about this weeks designs. Well, that and the fact that diamonds should not have been so 'uninspiring' to the designers. So I have to pick. Well, my inspiration was diamonds so how could I top that in jewelry? I can't, so I'll just add color to Alexandria von Bromssen's styling. Hope next week is more inspiring.”

Laura Bracken: “I was inspired by the diamonds but decided to go with black rather than clear. I made a necklace/bracelet/earring set comprised of faceted black Spinel and sterling silver.”

Joyce Ingram: "For the week two challenge, this necklace has lots of lovely silver and coated topaz and quartz. Bit of bling but very wearable."

Cynthia Ebner: "Diamonds and Pearls are a girls best friend! Both are used here in the 'Celebrate' bracelet!"

 

Nohline l'Ecuyer: "This is episode 2. Couldn't afford diamonds so I used fresh water pearls and fine silver to make these earrings. There is a second pair as well."

 

Julie Loebbaka: "I did not have any diamonds so I had to make due with multiple strands of faceted labradorite teardrops, garnets and gold vermeil beads. I really loved the necklace that Sandro had so I used the garnet and gold vermeil to get a similar look. This was a fun challenge, how can jewelry makers not be inspired by this week's subject?"
